OpenAI investment ($20M -> $2B return)
Recent reports suggest that the university has made early investments in OpenAI that could turn into a substantial financial gain. Court documents from Elon Musk’s lawsuit against OpenAI indicate that the university invested approximately $20 million before Microsoft’s $1 billion investment in 2019. If OpenAI eventually goes public, the stake is estimated to be worth around $2 billion. Now, what will the University do with that money, who knows?
While AI companies have attracted significant investment, their rapid growth raises concerns. Specifically, in education (the university's supposed real promise), generative AI tools have complicated questions around academic integrity and authentic student work. From the student perspective, the rules and policies regarding use remain vague, and often left up to individual instructor discretion. This is confusing since the university continues to invest in generative ai companies, but do not also invest in protections for these students as punishment is often subjective and reinforces existing power dynamics.
